The buzz today in LA is the Body Worlds 3 exhibit going on now across the street from the USC campus at the California ScienCenter. The exhibit is organized according to the major systems of the body. For example, the nervous system, the digestive system, the reproductive system, and the cardiovascular system are all explored. The amazing (and creepy) part is the fact that there are real full-body specimens included as well to show you exactly how different organs and systems fit into the body.
Entering the exhibit you have the choice to walk through on your own, or to borrow a head set that you listen to as you walk through that further explains what you are looking at. Some of my favorite areas were the cases that showed both a healthy and non-healthy organ. For example, there was a case that had a healthy adult human heart next to an adult human heart who had a heart attack. Or a healthy liver next to an alcoholics liver. It was fascinating, and seriously disturbing. How people can continue to smoke after seeing the healthy lung next to a smokers lung is beyond me.
Overall the experience was amazing and unforgettable. It runs through September 7, 2008 so there is still time to go visit for yourself. Even if you have a weak stomach (yes, the bodies are real), you will be able to appreciate the science behind everything. For ticket prices or any other information, click here.
